HL7
Health Level Seven (HL7) is an internationally accepted set of communication rules. It is a globally-accepted standard for enabling a wide range of health application products and software that are used to exchange clinical and administrative data. When enabled with HL7, enterprise systems in hospitals, pharmacies, community clinics, and practitioners’ offices and patient information systems can readily exchange data, irrespective of geographies or the hardware or software involved. When all institutions have the ability to freely exchange data among various enterprise systems, the vision of a worldwide ‘Electronic Health Record’ can become a reality.
Business Challenges
Electronic health records of patients are mostly maintained as paper files or as individual electronic files, neither of which are secure for transmission. Electronic health records might not have vital information gathered from physicians or pharmacists. It might not include patient information pertaining to their provincial health plan and supplemental medical plan provider. All this information may have an important bearing on the quality of treatment a patient receives or requires. But gathering dispersed pieces of information together is a difficult task that is both time-consuming and expensive. It may require a series of communication ups and downs including phone, fax, mail, courier, and computer interactions.
An integral part of hospital management is the need to share patient records with peer organizations. In such cases when the institutions involved have different data formats, sharing them could be a quite a challenge. If the records are converted to the shareable and standard HL7 format, this problem can be avoided. This conversion, however, warrants significant investments.
For healthcare institutions that are already using HL7 format, another potential pitfall is upgrading of their current HL7 version. Potentially, this is another area that calls for major investments.
What We Offer
Kumaran provides an HL7 Interfacing Converter, which is just the solution you need. Whenever patient records need to be transmitted to external systems, the HL7 interface engine converts them to the equivalent HL7 format and transmits the same to the destined host.
Further, when the HL7 Converter receives data in HL7 format from an external system, the interface converts the data into the native format and transmits it in the simplified format, by using its built-in intelligence.
If your organization uses a different version of HL7 to maintain records, the migration capabilities of Kumaran’s solution can help you. The HL7 Interface can receive data in any HL7 version, and can migrate it to the required version before transmitting it. This means that your organization can retain the existing format but still share records actively and without hindrances.
In case your organization wants to upgrade all your records from the existing HL7 version to a higher version, Kumaran Systems helps you by migrating the data to the required version. This ensures that whenever the records are transmitted, no runtime conversion would be required, thus providing a relatively quicker transmission.
Kumaran’s HL7 Converter is capable of handling huge amounts of data. You can also be sure that the solution uses the most secure conduits to convert and transmit your data. This is how Kumaran’s cost-effective and highly-powerful solution can help you retain your existing data format and still share data actively.
